As an IAF Board person, I am always on the lookout for artists dancing in the "in between". I've been participating in the American Craft Council shows for years and discovered many such dancers there. However, occasionally I encounter an artist so outstanding, skilled, driven and creative that all I want to do is stop and breathe in the spirit and dynamism of the work, then accept the challenge of the encounter to push my own work and thought process further. Such an artist is Thomas Wargin. Thomas is a sculptor in bronze and other media, a 2-D artist, an engineering patent holder and in my opinion very much one of our interstitial merry band defying definition.
He explains his work with these words:
"My sculpture represents a diverse array of skill sets and ideas. I am not fixed upon a certain style nor do I cater to trends. I simply let my imagination and visual perception create my work. I am an ideas man, sort of an artist-inventor. I want to create work that is unlike what I have seen before. I am trying to go the opposite way and am driven by what my mind will come up with next. I have a fixation over process and how things are made. I have a passion for engineering yet my true love is for the fine art and design. I am a thinker and my optimism lets me foresee beyond that which has already been seen."
I encourage all to take a journey with Thomas through his gallery pages...or better yet, for a real challenge, find a way to attend one of the shows where he is participating. Journey on!
