Ellen Denham

Ellen Denham is a singer, writer, voice teacher, and multidisciplinary performer currently pursuing a doctorate in music at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She discovered her love of the interstitial when writing the libretto for an original fantasy ballet, The Willow Maiden, performed by the Butler Ballet in 2003. The thrill of this artistic collaboration cured her of compartmentalizing her creative impulses into separate boxes. Now, she prefers to hang out in the dark alleys where artistic genres and disciplines intersect.

Her recent and upcoming performing credits include roles with Intimate Opera of Indianapolis and Indianapolis Opera, solo work with the UI New Music Ensemble and with Concerto Urbana, and improvisation with COLAB, a cooperative laboratory for collaborations between musicians, dancers, and engineers.

Since 2009 she has been a participant in the Indy Convergence, a cross-disciplinary collaborative residency for performing artists. Her Convergence work has included leading vocal improvisation workshops, performing in experimental theatre, and writing and directing projects including two short operas and a comic soundscape based on internet memes.

A graduate of the Odyssey Writing Workshop, Ellen has written for Classical Singer Magazine and her fiction has been published or is scheduled to appear in magazines including NewMyths.com and Daily Science Fiction. She first became involved with the IAF in 2009 when she began hosting the Interstitial Indy Salon in Indianapolis. More information can be found on her web site at http://denham.virtualave.net.
