Interstitial Arts

Board Member of IAF,
scholar, producer, analyst.
Long Beach, California

Joellen Easton has been engaged with the idea of interstitiality since Ellen Kushner first introduced her to it while working at Sound & Spirit. With a scholarly background in anthropology, Joellen has often found herself at the margins creatively and intellectually. She holds a B.A. in anthropology from Tufts University, and has studied classical trumpet performance at New England Conservatory, West African drumming at the University of Ghana, and audio art in the woods of Ontario. A longtime producer for public radio, she recently finished her master's in Comparative Media Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and now is working as a Public Insight Analyst for American Public Media in their Los Angeles office, developing online communities of public sources to enhance public radio news gathering. Joellen recently moved from Boston, MA to Long Beach, CA, and is working on publishing her master's thesis, “High-Interactivity Radio: Using the Internet to Enhance Community Among Radio Listeners.” Her blog is at: http://beachhead.squarespace.com.
